Key Personnel:

Our Directors at JEM Road construction have been with us from the very start. In fact, they set up the business together. Wayne and Joanne Murray have lead this business for the past 14 years.

Wayne Originally took on the business full time as Joanne still worked another job while looking after their two daughters, Megan and Emma.

The name JEM is actually derived from the first letters of Wayne’s family members, Joanne, Emma and Megan.

Wayne Murray : Company Director

Coming from a farming background Wayne found an interest in ‘all things’ mechanical at a young age. He started work at the age of 15 for ‘Fewsters’ which was based in Swalwell.  It was here where he served his apprenticeship as a mechanic working on various items of plant.

From here Wayne took up positions in various road surfacing companies gaining 20 years experience working within the road construction industry.

“Over the years I built up knowledge and gained invaluable experience in the civil engineering industry so in 2005 I took the decision to start my own business with the important backing of my family.

Joanne Murray- Company Director

I originally worked in the telecommunications sector for around 20 years with British Telecom. After taking a voluntary redundancy i decided to join the family business on a full time basis.

My role is focused on the day to day running of the office, dealing with all aspects of accounting, payroll, queries and organising training for our workforce.

During this time i have seen JEM grow into a well recognised surfacing contractor operating in the North East. Over the years we have successfully secured numerous major contract of which i am extremely proud.

Grant Williamson- Estimator

I originally worked as a network engineer for local Authority schools/academies but decided on a change of career so I approached Wayne about coming to work for JEM. i am now working towards a civil engineering qualification.

Working for JEM overall has been challenging and fast paced, but rewarding to myself and the company with the works that i have secured.

I have worked for JEM over the past 7 years however have only been foreman for 3 of those.

Being in this industry for over 30 years, i have the experience to handle all aspects of tarmac and groundwork’s. My experience in the industry allows us to deal with all matters of tarmacadam works and ensuring customer satisfaction at all times.

Andrew Carr- Supervisor

Andrew Carr started for JEM in 2011 as a HGV driver. After a number of years and as the company grew i was able to obtain a wide range of experience and became familiar with the way the company operated as a whole.

I am now working along side management, assisting in organising jobs from start to finish. This involves ordering materials, organising wagons and ensuring all correct equipment is on site. During my time with JEM i have also acquired a number of plant tickets to operate machinery.
